Greetings...
A timely flurry of activity has occurred since last issue, with even the
alternative (and secret) hills receiving at least a successful submission
or two.
The '94 hill has been the scene of many a battle for control, whether
you perceive the opponents to be veterans and new players, p-spacers
and pure warriors, or even magic age warriors and recent submissions.
The deadline for the IWT has been extended, so if you haven't done so
already, find out how to enter at the tournament's home page:
http://www.concentric.net/~liminal/IWT/index.html
A guide from getting started through to submitting a warrior to one of
the hills is now available on Philip Kendall's corewar page:
http://www.kendalls.demon.co.uk/pak21/corewar/index.html
This issue - Ben Ford shares his code for WingShot, and Ken Espiritu
reveals his stone/imp Baseline Plus.

The top 25 warriors are represented by just 9 independent authors: Ford
with 7, Schmidt with 5, Metcalf with 4, Wainwright, Liporati and WFB with
2 and the remainder with a single warrior each. ( 11 authors last issue,
10 the issue before )
Only four warriors survive since last issue as some powerful warriors are
unleashed and the hill stabilises. Three authors have been either using
or testing Q^4 scans using sne/seq/jmp technology. The full implications
of this remains to be seen.
Perhaps, the Q^4 will cause the demise of the q-scan! Afterall they are
smaller than older qscans, and will gradually push them from the hill.
However, their advantage also works against them - having a smaller
memory footprint means a Q^4 battling another Q^4 will score less hits
and consequently less points. The hill will be held in the icy grasp of
p-spacers and scanners once again :-)

An age of 19 since last issue brings about the demise of four aged warriors,
Liquid Fire (age 140), Brigadeer (169), Baseline Plus (232) and Fixed (235).
Once again a balance of scanners and stone/imps possess the top few ranks.

Extra Extra -
WingShot by Ben Ford
Currently King of both the no-pspace and tiny hills, and recently atop
Pizza's 94 hill, clearly WingShot is a warrior currently out-performing
other warriors of it's type. The combination of a Bi-Shot style clear
and a .8c scan proves effective in several environments, though like
most oneshots it suffers against CLP-type components such as the one
used in Kline's Rubble.

Extra Extra Extra -
Baseline Plus by Ken Espiritu
Until the recent rise of a more powerful Q^3 and Q^4 scanners, Baseline
had enjoyed a strong position on the '94nop hill along with Espiritu's
Fixed. Both warriors were finally pushed off, aged 232 (Baseline) and
235 (Fixed) two or three days ago, victims of the the eternal stuggle
to produce stronger, faster and smaller code.
However, despite not containing the latest in q-scanning technology,
Baseline is certainly not out of date, as evidenced in the body of the
warrior - the stone/imp.
The imp launcher is re-worked to damage as much core as possible as it
goes about it's duties. A simple improvement perhaps, but one which
I've seldom seen used.

sub.f #-st-1, jump
prime: mov.i impy, impy
jump: djn.f impy-st-1,<-100
impy: mov.i #st, *0
The four line stone is one of the most unique I have seen. It's bombs
via indirection, and sptr combines with pt to further increase core
colouring. Finally, as an added bonus a simple core-clear takes place.
